New York DJ, Roc Raida had passed away this weekend at age 37.
The DJ - real name is Anthony Williams - won the 1995 DMC World DJ Championship and was a member of a turntablist group known as The X-Ecutioners.

“The legendary Grand Master Roc Raida has passed away this morning,” a representative for the DJ told media. “Family and friends will miss him dearly. Please give the family their privacy.”

Statement from Roc Raida's family, confirming the tragic loss. "Anthony Williams p/k to the world as The Legendary Grandmaster Roc Raida has passed away unexpectedly today September 19 2009. He is survived by his wife, three lovely daughters, mother and friends. Raida was recently in an mixed martial arts accident, something that he has been practicing for several years. Although he had under gone two surgeries with great success, was released to an inpatient physical therapy facility and was in great spirits the past few days. This morning he started to have complications and passed. The family asks for privacy at this time."

Roc Raida started DJ’ing at the age of 10 after being inspired by his father, who was a member of Sugar Hill Records group Mean Machine.

He died on September 19, 2009. His last solo album was released in 2007 and is called, Beats, Cuts and Skits.

The X-Ecutioners formed as a DJ crew in the early nineties, originally calling themselves the X-Men and being comprised of 11 members. The crew changed their name due to trademark infringement and was reduced to members Rob Swift, Roc Raida, Total Eclipse, and Mista Sinista before releasing their debut album X-Pressions in 1997. Sinista later left the group shortly after the release of Built from Scratch in 2002, and Rob Swift left the group for personal and artistic reasons in 2005.

Since Swift’s departure, The X-Ecutioners have been scarcely heard of; however, the latest word is that the group has two new members, DJ Boogie Blind and DJ Precision. The X-Ecutioners have worked with many famous artists on numerous collaborations, including Kool G Rap, Cypress Hill, Mike Shinoda and they have also co-released an album with Mike Patton called General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners.

The X-Ecutioners contributed to a remix of Run-DMC’s ‘King of Rock’ on the Harmonix game Amplitude, and the DJ group’s song ‘Like This’ was featured in the videogame SSX 3.

DJ Jazzy Jeff Forced Off Stage in Kansas City Racist District

Jazzy Jeff forced off stage by the Kansas City Racist District, oops I mean "Entertainment District".

Legendary party-rocker DJ Jazzy Jeff was kicked off stage during a Kansas City stop on the Bacardi B-Live tour on June 6, due to a racist establishment, the Kansas City Star alleges. According to the paper, "The black community has been in arms about perceived racism at the entertainment district, a place their tax money helped fund." The Jazzy Jeff incident clearly does not help matters for the city.

Apparently, Jeff was instructed by a Power & Light (entertainment) district official to play Top 40 hits. He was several songs into a set of pop records that included songs by Jay-Z, Rihanna and Biz Markie, when his performance was cut short due to an issue with the style of music he was spinning. "My road manager walked up to me and said they were having problems with the music I was playing," Jeff told the paper. "They said I had to kick Skillz off the stage, change the format of the music I was playing or quit. They said if I continued playing they had 30 cops ready to come escort me offstage. So I stopped."

Venues should understand that when they hire a specific national DJ for a venue that they are hiring that DJ for their particular style and crowd draw, you hire the DJ for how he or she plays not to tell them what to play. As a venue you can tell local DJs to play this way or that way, knowing that if they don't you can always get another one, but even then the DJ should be able to decide if or when to break format for a few songs etc... but when it's a national act you have hired the DJ to perform what they are known for or what they deem approriate to perform.

Jazzy Jeff, who is arguably one of the world's best party DJs, though he's best known for his affiliation with the Fresh Prince, now known as Will Smith, and for inventing a seminal scratching technique called "transforming," collected the first hip hop Grammy award and spins close to 300 nights a year. This was his first time DJing in Kansas City.

Jon Stephens, an official from the Power & Light district, where the performance took place, contended that the issue was Jeff's volume rather than his selections. "Obviously we have a desire to book a diversity of acts," Stephens said. "We booked Jazzy Jeff on a Saturday night, the biggest night of the week in the district. We were excited to have him there. It's unfortunate that his sound and management people had problems adhering to the sound and audio rules."
This is highly unlikely since there are always sound production experts working the sound board at larger events like this, that ultimately control the overall sound system. If Jazzy Jeff kept raising the volume past the levels the sound man could always bring the overall sound down to the recommended levels until Jazzy jeff would not be able to raise the volume any higher due to him peaking out on his own sound mixer. So this is an obvious bogus statement made to hide the real issue for the whole incident... a racist view of music and a fear of losing a venue because of racially driven district policies.

Jeff says they explicitly took issue with music he played and complained about his hype man, Skillz, before threatening to forcibly escort him off stage."They said they didn't like Skillz' posture. They said he made gang-like signs and grabbed at his genitals," Jeff stated. "I play rock, funk, soul, pop, hip-hop, reggae. I don't play for a certain genre, race or gender. I play for music lovers... I didn't understand what element they were talking about. I looked out in the crowd and it was multicultural, but about 75 percent white. Everyone was having a great time. I wondered what was so offensive. I never had a race issue. I didn't know how to feel. I was playing [Biz Markie's] 'Just a Friend.' Is that offensive? What element? It's uncomfortable when you feel unwanted." Jeff stated that he intends to return to Kansas City to play for the fans who missed out on seeing him perform.

Las Vegas Nightclub and Midwest Nightclub Tour

In January 2009 DJ Emir Did a quick mini midwest tour Droping his genius mixes, DJ abilities and remixes on fans in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Las Vegas.

Before heading back to Denver DJ Emir's last stop was Las Vegas where his style of mixing really took off. Completely frenzying the crowd at all three spots he mixed at, Emir really put it down hard on the turntables the entire week. He must have really been feeling it when he was in Vegas this time cause he was killing it with the live remixes, mixes, juggles and scratches.

On Saturday Emir must have been digging deep into his repertoir because he even surprised us with some of the insane mixes he put together. I think a few people were surprised to find out DJ Emir resides in Denver, They just couldn't believe Denver had such a talented DJ hidden in what they thought was a One horse town. DJ Emir's originally from Puerto Rico and New York, but that will be our little secret ;).

Our blog team was given a huge amount of mixtape CDs from Emir as promotional giveaways just a month earlier. We hadn't had a chance to really hand out a ton of them so when Emir invited us to meet up with him in Las vegas for the last part of his Midwest tour we figured we'd bring some along. Knowing the team would bump into several hundred people throughout this trip we brought with us over 1000 of DJ Emir's hot mixtape cds which we gave away to Emir's new fans and a few familiar faces as well.

Talks are in the works to haveDJ Emir come back to Las Vegas a little more often. We also dropped Ironman mixtape CDs at many of the other casinos he wasn't performing at in an attempt to help One of our favorite DJs pick up a few Vegas residencies or special events. (We'll keep you all posted)

On his days off we met up with Emir and we all visited other nightclubs and other casinos to check out what we expected to be awsome nights of great dJs and entertainment. But we were sadly dissapointed by many of the spots as their deejays simply didn't match up in intensity, style or ability to many of the other DJs we have become accustomed to hearing.

Las Vegas, known for its huge casinos and lavish nightclubs had fallen off a little on some of their nightclub DJ standards. Lazy deejays were croping up at the most unlikely nightclubs. We spoke to some associates from LA about how our friend was dissapointed about the Deejays in LA when he first moved out there. They mentioned they too were dissapointed when they first moved out to LA as well, we mentioned our surprise dissapointment over the Las Vegas DJ Scene. That's when they suggested it's partly because Vegas is importing the same DJs from the Los Angeles scene. Apparently Vegas has fallen victim to flying out a few of the lazy Deejays of Los Angeles. Which is a shame since there are many other great deejays out there that are far better deserving of a residency in one of the entertainment capitals of the world.

We did however find A few other exceptional DJs during the nights, One other hot DJ out in Vegas was DJ Serafin of the Crooklynclan/CrackforDJs crews. DJ Serafin's mix style energy and enthusiasm was much like DJ Emir's style of mixing. DJ Serafin really knew how to rock the crowd and reaffirmed our faith in Las Vegas nightclubs and Las Vegas DJs. After hearing him live we can now add DJ Serafin to our growing list of favorite nightclub DJs which now include: DJ Serrafin, DJ AM, DJ Craze, DJ Emir, DJ Z-Trip, DJ Vajra, and DJ Sniper.

Picture of DJ Serafin
We were unable to catch DJ AM this time arround but he always puts on a great show as does DJ-Ztrip, we were fortunate enough to catch both of those guys at Beta nightclub in Denver when they came through this past year. Z-trip signed DJ Emir's jacket, so I guess you could say Z-Trip is also One of our our favorite DJ's favorite DJ :) LOL

DJ Emir Made some decent cash while in Vegas but being a gambleing city well lets just say he reinvested in Vegas nightlife. Lesson learned, we hope, next time just keep him busy deejaying and watching Vegas shows, no gambling. PS- when in Vegas always take payment in a check... LOL

Of course Vegas is also well known for gambling as well as for it's great live performance shows We decided to catch the Circue Du Soleil show Zumanity which was playing at the New York, New York Hotel It was a funny sexy show with plenty of the unique and insane talents and performers you come to expect from a Circue Du Soliel Show.

This particular show wasn't the one to take the kiddies to with its very erotic displays and very sexual nature. We rather enjoyed the show and the abilities of the performers. We were also very impressed with the strength and balance of all the performers especially the strength of the smallest of them and the lady that did the flying ribbon act both their shoulders had to be extremely powerful to withstand the forces they were exerting on themselves with the huge drops and sudden stops they were making with the cloth.

Hotel New York New York. Each of the hotel towers is actually fashioned after New York Citys most famous downtown buildings. And there is a huge rollercoaster that you can ride all day. When I say huge it's one of the bigger ones we've seen in our travels.

We didn't have the time to ride it this time (at least we couldn't convince the scardy cats to get on board anyway) We'll be sure they at least take pictures of us on the ride next time if they don't want to come along. P***s LOL.

DJ Emir is always small in stature but bigger than life when he's on the turntables! LOL Here Emir is Shown with the much taller New York New York Casino hostesses.

The Palazzo / Venitian hotel has a beatiful Venice Canal gondola section with a replica of Venice's famous canal system. Tons of fun if you have the time to hop aboard for an hour or so.

DJ Emir Mixtape fans were found all over Las Vegas, from Casino to Casino as we found many existing fans and  also created new fans out in Las Vegas. We had a few CDs left after the tour and handed the rest out at the airports which always makes us feel bad when we hear... "if someone you don't know tries to hand you something...." LOL

Coming back to freezing weather after a small stint down south was quite harsh, and during these cold months Denver's scene dies off a little on its snowy and ultra cold days, but I think we were all pretty much partied out and ready for a rest anyway... but so much for that plan, cause it's back to grinding away as usual.

See you all on the next leg of the tour if he invites us again, hope to catch you in your town soon. Vanessa V Blogger and Journalist Extraordinaire.

Beta Nightclub Denver Colorado

Beta
Beatport gives birth to a new club.

By Jon Solomon
Published on March 13, 2008
Westword Magazine

Denver-based Beatport.com pretty much dominates the world of electronic and dance-music downloads through its online store. The guys behind Beatport know the music inside out and have been booking some of the world's best DJs for the past decade — so it seems only fitting that they've finally opened their own club. They bought the 16,000-square-foot building at 1909 Blake Street that had held Rise, overhauled it and this past weekend showed off their new spot, Beta Nightclub.

Since Beta will showcase heavy-hitters in the DJ world, it has a hell of a sound system: Beta is the first club in North America with the new Dance Array 4 Speaker Stack System by Funktion-One, the award-winning English company. Taking advantage of this killer system will be New York's DVDJ Unique, who'll bring his audio-visual mash-ups on Fridays, and the Triad Dragons crew (residents Dragon, Trajikk and Kostas), with top-notch acts like Paul van Dyk and Armin van Buuren on Global Thursdays. On Saturday nights, the club will feature such internationally celebrated DJs as Jesse Rose (March 29) and Dimitri From Paris (April 26), as well as Beatport.com's resident DJ, Jonas Tempel. Also on Saturdays, the Beatport Lounge will host DJs Clark Warner and Wyatt Earp. Essentially a club within the club, the lounge has its own Funktion-One sound system and is 100 percent green. For that matter, all of Beta is designed to be environmentally friendly, and recycling centers will be installed at major traffic points.
Watch for Beta's VIP grand-opening party on Wednesday, March 19, with Z-Trip. And over Memorial Day weekend, the club will dedicate its 5,000-square-foot patio with some help from Bad Boy Bill, DJ Vice and James Zabiela.
